1,000 more people shot in Chicago compared with same time last year

A thousand more people have been shot in Chicago this year compared with the same time last year after a weekend that saw eight people killed and at least 40 wounded, according to police and data compiled by the Tribune.

At least 3,475 people had been shot in the city as of shortly after midnight Monday compared with 2,441 people shot this time last year, an increase of 1,034, according to Tribune data. There have been at least 595 homicides this year compared with 409 this time last year, an increase of 186.

The gun violence over the weekend was at levels usually seen in the summer when shootings typically spike.

A single attack Friday night in East Garfield Park killed one man and left six others wounded, according to police. The people were standing together in the 3300 block of West Maypole Street when someone opened fire from a black vehicle, police said.

An attack of that scale has not occurred in Chicago since 2014, when seven people -- including several young teens -- were shot in Lawndale.

The Maypole shooting capped off an exceptionally deadly night on the West Side. Less than a half-hour before, two men were fatally shot in a South Austin drive-by, police said. About an hour before that, an 18-year-old man was killed in West Garfield Park

But shootings occurred in nearly every corner of Chicago over the weekend, from a fatal attack in West Rogers Park to a shooting in Morgan Park near the southern border.

A man was shot Sunday afternoon near the 95th Street Red LineCTA station, where he ran after being hit in the shoulder.

Overall, six people were killed and 14 were wounded fromFriday afternoon to Saturday morning; from Saturday morning to Sunday morning, one person was killed and 17 were wounded; and from Sunday to just past midnight Monday, one person was killed and at least nine others were wounded.

In addition, a man was shot by police officers responding to a robbery at a gas station in West Humboldt Park on Sunday night, police said. He was shot in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

A police officer who responded to several calls about illegal street racing and reckless driving found himself surrounded by a mob of angry people, some of whom yelled and cursed at him while others hit and kicked his vehicle as he sat inside.

“F the police, we run the streets,” they said, according to Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer, ABC affiliate KFSN-TV reported.

The incident happened the afternoon of Sept. 25. The Fresno Police Department and California Highway Patrol received reports of large crowds blocking traffic a few miles outside of downtown Fresno, according to the police department.

A California Highway Patrol officer, who was first on scene, spotted a reckless driver and got out of his vehicle to make a traffic stop, the police department said. Then, people began yelling at the driver to leave. The driver sped away, and the officer went back to his vehicle to chase him. That’s when a crowd of about 30 to 40 surrounded the officer’s sport-utility vehicle.

Several people can be seen violently kicking the sides of the SUV while others recorded the incident with their phones.

The officer, whose name was not released, was able to drive away unharmed.

[LAPD’s fatal shooting of black teen is latest to spark angry protest]

Over the past week, the police department has posted to its Facebook page several still photos taken from videos of the attack.

Three men, Federico Gonzalez, 20; Gabriel Deanda, 18; and Milton Rodriguez, 29, have been arrested in connection with the incident, according to mediareports.

Rodriguez was the driver whom the officer tried to pull over, the Fresno Bee reported. The officer’s dash camera and a license plate reader were able to collect information about the Chevrolet Tahoe that Rodriguez was driving, according to the paper.

One of the suspects was arrested after his fingerprints were traced from the officer’s SUV, according to media reports. One of them also admitted to investigators that he was upset with the California Highway Patrol for towing his car.

Both Gonzalez and Deanda are members of the Bulldog gang, the Fresno Bee reported.

The attack resulted in about $12,000 worth of damage to the patrol car, which had several dents and shattered windows.

Police are still looking for more suspects, including Guadalupe Gonzalez, 19, and a still-unidentified man who, police said, was wearing a red baseball cap and tried to throw what appeared to be a large rock at the officer.

“We’re going to identify as many people as possible that were involved in this incident and we’re going to arrest them,” Dyer told ABC affiliate KFSN-TV. “We’ll work with the DA’s office to prosecute them and make sure they’re prosecuted on some serious felony charges.”

Dyer said that had the officer gotten out of his car when the crowd surrounded him, “I’m not sure what would’ve happened.”

Investigators think that some of the suspects came from the Bay Area, but that a majority are from Fresno in California’s Central Valley. Dyer told reporters that the attack occurred during a street-racing event.

The Washington Post was unable to reach someone from the police department or the California Highway Patrol on Sunday.

The incident comes at a tense time for law enforcement in the country.

Just a few days before the attack on the officer, the fatal shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, who is black, prompted riots in Charlotte and repeated calls for authorities to release video footage of the shooting. The footage was later released, but it did not show whether Scott was armed.

On Sept. 16, a Tulsa police officer shot and killed an unarmed black man. Officer Betty Jo Shelby, who has been charged with first-degree manslaughter for the death of Terence Crutcher, pleaded not guilty during an arraignment Friday.

In Fresno, the shooting death of Dylan Noble in June prompted its own angry demonstrations. A vigil for the 19-year-old, who is white, featured Confederate flags and a “White Lives Matter” sign. Body-camera footage showed officers fatally shooting the unarmed 19-year-old, who is seen hiding his hands behind his back and disobeying officers’ commands.

According to The Washington Post’s database, police fatally shot 991 people in 2015 and 719 this year. Of those shot this year, 43 were unarmed, while nearly 400 had a gun.

Speaking at a news conference Friday, Dyer, the Fresno police chief, said there appears to be a willingness from some people to attack police officers.

“We know what the environment is across the nation today with protests, riots and police officers being attacked and a lot of the criticism that law enforcement faces,” Dyer said, according to the Fresno Bee. “I believe this is a symptom of that.”

An Alabama teen was brutally beaten after he posted pro-police comments on Facebook in the aftermath of recent police shootings.

Brian Ogle, 17, is in critical condition with a fractured skull and trauma to his brain,WBMA reported.

His mother, Brandi Allen, says her son was targeted for his views, and she is calling the beating a “hate crime.”

“Not knowing if my son is going to make it to his 18th birthday this month, I don’t know if anybody can understand what that feels like,” Allen said to WBMA.

Allen said he was targeted because of his pro-police comments on Facebook after students wore Black Lives Matter shirts to Sylacauga High School last week.

Police say he was beaten up by multiple people in an abandoned parking lot Friday.

Police attribute the beating to possible racial tensions that are growing at the school, but did not find any evidence that Black Lives Matter contributed to this shooting.

“I want to see them in jail, this most certainly is a race issue, it’s a hate crime.” Allen said.

Allen is seeking justice for her son no matter who did this.

“I want them punished to the fullest extent, to the fullest, my son could have lost his life. I won’t stop until they are punished,” Allen said.

Police have not yet made any arrests in this case.

#BlackLivesMater calls on #Charlotte #POLICE CHIEF to Resign !

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Angry Charlotte residents verbally lashed City Council members for hours, complaining about what they called unaccountable police officers and civilian leaders who have failed to force change as the city marked a week of protests since a police officer fatally shot a black man.

At its Monday night meeting, the council opened the floor to dozens of residents who voiced their opinions about the Sept. 20 shooting of Kevin Lamont Scott by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Many called on Mayor Jennifer Roberts, Police Chief Kerr Putney and other council members to resign on the seventh day of protests since the shooting.

"It's going to be rough in these streets until you give justice to our people," said the Rev. Milton Williams, the final speaker in a three-hour string. "Our city's in an uproar, and you did not respond."

Many of the speakers carried signs expressing their anger. One man's sign called for the repeal of legislation taking effect on Saturday blocking the release of police video without a court order. Many speakers demanded that police release all video footage of the confrontation.

Scott's family and advocacy groups complain that the department divulged only about three minutes of footage from two cameras. They have urged the police department to release all other video footage it has, as well as audio recordings of communications that could clarify how the situation unfolded. A media coalition is also requesting more footage.

"We have no reason to trust you, and you're giving us even less," Khasha Harris told City Council members.

Some speakers brought their children, not only to share in the moment, but in several instances, to address the council. Many in the crowd were brought to tears by the comments of Zianna Oliphant, a child who needed a stool to be seen over the lectern.

"It's a shame that our fathers and brothers are killed and we can't see them anymore," Zianna said. "It's a shame that we have to go through that graveyard and bury him. We need our fathers and brothers to be by our side."

Council member Kenny Smith said the council should be listening and taking action to answer the concerns.

"The unrest here has been decades in the making," council member Al Alston said. "Tuesday was the boiling point, and it's getting hotter."

The footage released so far of Scott's shooting left questions in many people's minds — including whether he was holding a gun, as police have stated. Scott's family said he didn't have a weapon. The footage includes body camera video from one officer, but not the black officer who fatally wounded Scott.

The gun recovered at the scene of Scott's shooting had been stolen and later sold to Scott, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police source told The Associated Press on Monday. The source insisted on speaking anonymously because the State Bureau of Investigation continues to look into the case. SBI Agent Erik Hooks declined comment when asked whether the gun had been stolen.

At a rally at a downtown church, North Carolina NAACP President Rev. William Barber said federal authorities should investigate the city's police department. Police officers who fail to operate their body cameras during an encounter should be prosecuted, Barber said.

Six people were fatally shot since body cameras were given to all patrol officers about a year ago. But the officers who fired the fatal shots in five of those cases — including Scott's — weren't using the cameras.
